What is BTU?

BTU (British Thermal Unit) is a unit of heat defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.

In air conditioning, BTU measures how much heat an AC unit can remove from a room per hour.

Sizing Guide

100-300 sq ft: 5,000-7,000 BTU

300-500 sq ft: 8,000-12,000 BTU

500-800 sq ft: 14,000-18,000 BTU

800-1,200 sq ft: 21,000-25,000 BTU

1,200-1,500 sq ft: 28,000-30,000 BTU

Important Considerations

• Add 10% for sunny rooms

• Add 600 BTU per additional person

• Add 4,000 BTU for kitchen spaces

• High ceilings require more capacity
