What If You Break the CD Early?
Estimate the effect of an early-withdrawal penalty on your CD.
A $10,000 CD at 5.25% APY for 12 months
is estimated to earn about $537 in interest before tax and reach approximately $10,537 at maturity.
What Is a Certificate of Deposit?
A Certificate of Deposit (CD) is a deposit account that generally pays a fixed return for keeping money deposited for a specified period. The CD’s term, APY, deposit amount and account terms determine how much you may receive when the CD matures.
This CD calculator helps estimate the maturity value, interest earned and after-tax value of a CD using the information you provide. It can also help you compare different CD terms before deciding which assumptions to use for your own planning.
How Does a CD Calculator Work?
A CD calculation starts with the amount deposited, the return rate and the length of time the money remains in the account. When a nominal interest rate is used, compounding frequency affects the resulting balance. When APY is used, the APY already incorporates the effect of compounding for an annual period.
A = P × (1 + r / n)ⁿᵗ
- A = ending value
- P = initial deposit
- r = annual nominal interest rate
- n = compounding periods per year
- t = time in years
APY vs. Interest Rate
APY stands for Annual Percentage Yield. It expresses the annual return while taking compounding into account. The nominal interest rate does not include the same compounding effect.
Because CD advertisements commonly display APY, this calculator provides an APY input mode as the default. If you have a nominal annual rate instead, switch the rate type and select the applicable compounding frequency.
How Much Interest Will a $10,000 CD Earn?
The answer depends on the CD’s APY and term. For example, a $10,000 CD earning 5.25% APY for one year would produce an estimated maturity value of approximately $10,525 when APY is treated as the annual effective yield.

Are CD Earnings Taxable?
CD interest may be taxable depending on your tax situation and the type of account. The tax field in this calculator is an estimate only. It does not determine your actual tax liability.
What Happens When a CD Matures?
At maturity, the bank or credit union generally makes the CD’s principal and earned interest available according to the account agreement. Some CDs may automatically renew if no action is taken during the applicable grace period.
Do Longer CD Terms Always Earn More?
Not necessarily. A longer term can provide more time for interest to accumulate, but the rate offered for a longer term may be lower than the rate available for a shorter term. Compare both the rate and the total time your money will be committed.
What About Early CD Withdrawal?
Many CDs impose an early-withdrawal penalty if money is removed before maturity. The penalty varies by financial institution and product. Use the early-withdrawal section above only as an estimate; always check your CD agreement for the actual penalty.
CD Calculator FAQ
What does a CD calculator calculate?
A CD calculator estimates the maturity value and interest earned from a certificate of deposit using your deposit amount, rate or APY, term and other selected assumptions.
What information do I need to calculate CD earnings?
You generally need the initial deposit, CD term and APY. If you are using a nominal interest rate instead of APY, you may also need the compounding frequency.
What is CD maturity value?
CD maturity value is the estimated amount available at the end of the CD term, including the original deposit and accumulated interest, subject to the account’s actual terms.
What is the difference between APY and interest rate?
APY expresses the annual yield after accounting for compounding. A nominal interest rate does not represent the same effective annual yield unless its compounding assumptions are also considered.
Can I calculate CD interest after tax?
Yes. Enter an estimated tax rate and the calculator will show an estimated tax amount and after-tax interest. This is only a planning estimate and is not tax advice.
Does compounding frequency affect CD earnings?
Yes when a nominal interest rate is used. More frequent compounding can produce a higher effective annual yield. When you enter APY, the annual effective yield already reflects compounding.
Can I calculate the CD maturity date?
Yes. Enter a CD start date and the calculator estimates the maturity date from the selected term.
Does this calculator use live CD rates?
No. This is a calculation tool, not a live CD-rate marketplace. Enter the APY or rate offered by the financial institution you are considering.
This tool performs calculations in your browser using the values entered above. No bank rate is automatically assumed and no personal financial information is sent to a server by this calculator.
Results are estimates for educational and planning purposes. Actual CD maturity values, tax treatment, interest posting and early-withdrawal penalties depend on the financial institution and the specific CD agreement.
