Understanding Mass Calculation
Mass Formula
The mass (m) of an object is calculated by multiplying its density (ρ) by its volume (V):
m = ρ × V
Where:
- m is the mass of the object
- ρ (rho) is the density of the material
- V is the volume the object occupies
This formula is fundamental in physics, chemistry, and engineering for determining the mass of objects when their density and volume are known.
Common Material Densities
| Material | Density (g/cm³) | Mass of 100 cm³ |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | 19.32 | 1,932 g |
| Lead | 11.34 | 1,134 g |
| Iron | 7.87 | 787 g |
| Aluminum | 2.70 | 270 g |
| Water (4°C) | 1.00 | 100 g |
| Pine Wood | 0.50 | 50 g |
| Air (20°C) | 0.0012 | 0.12 g |
Density determines the mass of a given volume. Materials with higher density have more mass in the same volume.
