Understanding Mass Calculation
Mass Formula
The mass (m) of an object is calculated by multiplying its density (ρ) by its volume (V):
m = ρ × V
Where:
- m is the mass of the object
- ρ (rho) is the density of the material
- V is the volume the object occupies
This formula is fundamental in physics, chemistry, and engineering for determining the mass of objects when their density and volume are known.
Common Material Densities
Material | Density (g/cm³) | Mass of 100 cm³ |
---|---|---|
Gold | 19.32 | 1,932 g |
Lead | 11.34 | 1,134 g |
Iron | 7.87 | 787 g |
Aluminum | 2.70 | 270 g |
Water (4°C) | 1.00 | 100 g |
Pine Wood | 0.50 | 50 g |
Air (20°C) | 0.0012 | 0.12 g |
Density determines the mass of a given volume. Materials with higher density have more mass in the same volume.
