W-4 Form Guidance

Understanding the New W-4 Form

The redesigned W-4 form makes it easier for your employer to withhold the correct federal income tax from your paycheck. The new form eliminates the concept of allowances and replaces it with a more straightforward approach.

Key Steps in the W-4 Form:

  • Step 1: Personal Information – Enter your name, address, Social Security number, and filing status.
  • Step 2: Multiple Jobs or Spouse Works – Complete this step if you have more than one job or are filing jointly and your spouse also works.
  • Step 3: Claim Dependents – For dependents, multiply the number of qualifying children under 17 by $2,000 and other dependents by $500.
  • Step 4: Other Adjustments – Use this step for other income, deductions, or extra withholding.
  • Step 5: Sign Here – Sign and date the form.

Tips for Accurate Withholding:

  • If you have multiple jobs, use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator for accuracy
  • Update your W-4 after major life events (marriage, divorce, birth of child)
  • Consider additional withholding if you have significant non-wage income
  • Review your withholding annually or when tax laws change

Step 3: Claim Dependents

For dependents, multiply the number of:

  • Qualifying children under 17 by $2,000
  • Other dependents by $500

Enter the total in Step 3. This reduces the amount of tax withheld from your paycheck.

Step 4: Other Adjustments

Use Step 4 if you want to:

  • Withhold additional tax from each paycheck
  • Account for tax deductions beyond the standard deduction
  • Account for other income not from jobs
